EMS FAQ

Exoflow > EMS FAQ
IS AN EMS WORKOUT SAFE?

Yes, EMS training is completely safe. The low impulse frequency used in the EMS suits cannot penetrate smooth muscle and therefore, is not able to reach any vital organs. While it might seem counter-intuitive to mix water and electricity, the technology has been developed over decades of research and the combination is completely safe and will not cause any electrocution.

WHAT DOES IT FEEL LIKE WEARING THE EMS TRAINING SUIT?

The EMS training suit is fitted to you and should feel snug all over for maximum effectiveness. Your trainer will pre-wet all of the conducting pads with warm water so it is not a cold shock as you put the suit on. You should feel a slight amount of tension this means the EMS training suit is properly fitted. When the EMS training suit is activated you should feel a slight pulse, almost like a vibration to begin with.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF EMS TRAINING?

EMS training promotes a high level of metabolic activity that starts during your training session and continues for many hours while you are continuing your normal daily activities. The higher your metabolism, the better your body will burn fat and build lean muscle mass. One main benefit for EMS training is that it can be used as a low impact form of exercise to help with rehabilitation for injuries, health issues and simply for those that appreciate the benefits of healthy exercise but do not like the high impact gym training style.

CAN YOU BUILD MUSCLE WITH EMS TRAINING?

The short answer is yes, EMS can help to build muscle. One of the most amazing parts of the EMS suit is that it can activate 300 muscles all at the same time – no gym workout can ever achieve this! EMS training can build muscle activation by 10% – 15% which in turn will develop muscular strength. If muscle gain is your goal, our EMS Perth trainers will be able to programme in the right exercises to achieve the ultimate muscle gain in a shorter amount of time. EMS training can increase muscle mass and definition – just look at Usain Bolt for proof!

CAN EMS TRAINING HARM MY HEART?

No EMS training cannot harm your heart. The low-frequency impulse exclusively activates the striated skeletal muscles, meaning it does not reach any vital organs including the heart. However, if you do have a pace-maker fitted sadly EMS training is not for you.

DOES EMS TRAINING ACTUALLY WORK?

EMS training has been around since the 1940’s and has exclusively been used by professional athletes until the last decade. The performance gains that have been seen in athletes over the last century speak for themselves. Research proves that EMS training is an effective alternative to regular resistance based training and will enhance not only your health, your mobility but also your overall sporting goals. Studies show that EMS training targets 90% of your muscle fibres compared to a traditional gym based workout that activates 30% – 60% of muscles fibres at a time.

CAN I DO AN EMS WORKOUT EVERYDAY?

Like everything in life, too much of anything is not always a good thing! The amount of weekly EMS workouts is dependent on the frequency used and the style of training you are focusing on. If you are looking to use EMS for strength improvements, research shows that 2 EMS workouts a week will give you the most gains. Whereas, if you are using EMS training for endurance sessions somewhere between 3 and 5 EMS workouts a week has been shown to be optimal.

IS EMS TRAINING MORE EFFICIENT THAN CONVENTIONAL RESISTANCE TRAINING?

EMS training is definitely more time efficient than conventional training. A 20-minute EMS workout is equivalent to a regular 90 minute gym session. However, at ExoFlow we see the benefit in both and strongly believe that a combination of both EMS training and conventional training is the most beneficial for all health needs.

WHO IS EMS FOR?

EMS is one of the most widely used training and rehabilitation tools as it can adapt for all sports needs and all rehabilitation requirements. It is becoming more widely spoken about in professional sports as well as in physiotherapy practices. Research has dictated that EMS can be used for any person over the age of 18.

WHAT DO I WEAR FOR AN EMS TRAINING SESSION?

A set of blended cotton EMS training undergarments is worn underneath the EMS suit. Each client has their own EMS training undergarments to ensure ultimate hygiene when using the suits. These garments are purchased separately through Exoflow Guildford EMS.

CAN I CONTINUE MY REGULAR TRAINING ROUTINE WHEN USING EMS TRAINING?

Variety is the spice of life and the key to keeping training interesting and motivating. We highly recommend adding other forms of movement to your EMS training routine. A combination of any form of movement alongside the EMS training will help you to reach the goals you have set with your EMS trainer.

WHEN SHOULD I AVOID EMS TRAINING?

EMS is one of the most versatile forms of training and therefore the restrictions are very limited compared to other exercise options.  As with many training programmes, the main restrictions for EMS training are for those who:

  • Are pregnant
  • Have a pacemaker or other electrical implant
  • Have an acute illness, such as fever, viral infection or acute inflammatory disease
  • Suffer from epilepsy.

This list is not exhaustive and you should discuss any concerns with your EMS personal trainer before any EMS training commences.

HOW LONG BEFORE I SEE RESULTS FROM EMS TRAINING?

Due to the amazing efficiency of EMS training you should see results within four sessions. You will see improvements in posture and feel stronger without feeling like you have spent all your time in the gym. After ten sessions, you will see and feel significant benefits to strength, aesthetics and overall wellbeing.

CAN EMS TRAINING BE USED WHEN INJURED?

Obviously it will depend on the level and severity of the injury and this should be discussed with your EMS trainer and medical professionals. In general, EMS training is one of the best tools for rehabilitating injuries and has been widely used by physiotherapists to hasten recovery. At ExoFlow, we do offer recovery sessions which will be able to target certain areas and help to speed recovery from any injury.
